PREVENTION INSTITUTE
Prevention Institute (PI) is the national center for developing and advancing the practice of primary prevention. PI strives to shift the overarching mindset and approach to health from one that focuses solely on treating sick individuals, to one that prevents disease, violence and injury before they occur. PI synthesizes research and practice; develops prevention tools and frameworks; designs and guides inter-sectoral partnerships; and provides training, technical assistance, and strategy development to promote innovative community-oriented solutions, better government and business practices, and policy change. Our approach to solving complex health and social issues is to address multiple problems concurrently, which all stem from similar underlying factors. We work across multiple Focus Areas and our core mission is to promote health equity—the commitment to ensuring that every person has an equal opportunity to be healthy and safe.

Prevention Institute is the lead coordinating agency for the Movember Foundation's Making Connections Initiative, which began in 2015 and focuses on improving the mental health and wellbeing of men and boys in the U.S. This partnership leverages the work of local organizations to bring primary prevention activities to a community scale to promote resilience across generations. Additionally, PI is exploring how prevention strategies benefit those with significant exposure to violence, trauma, and poor health conditions, which all contribute to adverse mental health issues. The Movember Foundation is funding the work; Prevention Institute is providing coordination, training, and technical assistance; and a team from the University of South Florida is evaluating progress and outcomes. Prevention Institute also developed The Making Connections Backpack is a comprehensive guide to creating gender- and culture-relevant community-level approaches to improving mental health and wellbeing.
